Islandora Enterprise (ISLE) is a community-driven project to develop a tool to support easier installation and maintenance of Islandora. You can read all about it here (including an Executive Summary), but the gist of how this will be accomplished is:
ISLE separates an institution’s customizations from core code, and moves that core code into containers that are easily updated, simplifying and largely automating the process of installation and updates/maintenance of Islandora. ISLE also bundles together the best shared modules into a common, production-ready and security-hardened platform.
Led by the Islandora Collaboration Group, with development support from Born-Digital, the ISLE project is funded by contributions from members of the Islandora community. Development is underway, with ISLE currently in a "Public Comment Period." If you're not already a part of the project, this is where you come in. ISLE is intended for use by the entire Islandora community, so a specifications document is open for review and comments, and there are regular public comment meetings (please join the ISLE Updates Google group if you would like to join in on the next one).
The Islandora Foundation stands in support of ISLE as a great example of how this community can come together to build solutions that benefit everyone. ISLE offers the potential to significantly reduce the installation and maintenance costs of Islandora and its dependencies. Easier installation has been perhaps the most-requested feature improvement made by the Islandora community. We are hopeful that ISLE will also help to provide a common platform to ease migration to Islandora CLAW and applaud the efforts of the ISLE team to design this Islandora 7.x tool with CLAW in mind.
ISLE is expected to be completed and available for public use around Feb 2018. The public comment period will close in mid-October so that prototype development can commence, so please help out the team by giving your comments now.
